Corporate Wellness in 2024

Wellness at work – the so-called “organizational well-being” is now an essential element in any company. It is the result of the greater and greater attention that is given to mental health in the assessment of the quality of work, as perceived by the employee.

Over the last few years, the focus was all around the idea of permanent contracts, benefits, wages. However, now the key word is “rethinking”: rethinking the ways to organise work teams, rethinking work itself – which should be flexible and modern for everyone in the company. This can and is mostly achieved with areas dedicated to regeneration that can have a positive and constant impact on the overall well-being of employees.

Fighting the Great Resignation

After the first lock-down in 2020, companies have had to deal with a new phenomenon called “great resignation”. This phenomenon led numerous employees to file their resignation, despite having a stable and secured job.
In Italy, according to the data collected by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies, voluntary resignation concerned almost 500.000 workers between April and June 2021.

The pandemic has somehow favoured the growth of a new awareness regarding the importance of well-being at work.
So the results of the survey conducted by the IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV) come as no surprise. On a sample of 14.000 people worldwide, it has been shown that the main causes of voluntary resignations are:

  • to work in a more flexible context;
  • to have more focused and fulfilling tasks;
  • to achieve a good work-life balance;
  • to have opportunities for training and professional growth.

Using a term coined by the New York Times, companies now have to face the so-called YOLO Economy (You Live Once), which sees Millennials consider the financial, psychological and social expense of going back to work much greater than the potential benefits.
This new awareness is reflected in a life style characterised by brave decisions, like giving up a “safe” job to look for something that is more suited to one’s need and work-life balance.
In this context, it is clear how corporate well-being is acquiring and ever more crucial role in the activities of HR Managers, Health&Safety Managers and entrepreneurs.

Il well-being dei dipendenti al centro

An article on Forbes USA states that “employees’ well-being is no longer a benefit, but an opportunity for the company to support employees in all aspects of their private and professional life.”
This concept goes beyond physical well-being, embracing all that concerns emotion, financial health, social and professional recognition.
The key aspect in well-being policies, today, is the ability to implement clear and precise strategies for stress management at work. This is indeed the fundamental means to reduce the impact of the Great Resignation on the one hand, and, on the other, to attract and keep the talents, especially in the new generations who are growing increasingly aware of these aspects.

Employees' mental health

Physical well-being is not separated from mental well-being. The latter was profoundly put to the test during the pandemic, and by the pressure of a labour market that has been very unstable over the last few years.
In fact, together with the phenomenon of the “great resignation”, companies are now coping more and more often with their employees’ cases of burnout.
While companies with over 250 employees have already started tackling the problem, with a 47% increase in investments for stress management programs, smaller companies are now starting to design their strategies. They often need a trusted partner to develop initiatives and regeneration areas that are consistent with the real needs of the company.
